Thinking, wishing, praying spring; seems like a good time to post about a butterfly birthday party with a 413 connection. Our younger daughter adores butterflies so it was easy to pick her second birthday party theme. We lucked out with the fact that Dollar Tree stocks a beautiful butterfly party assortment (love that I'm the only one rocking the party hat in the pic below and my girls so do NOT have their party faces on). I was also able to pick up the party favors at Dollar Tree, colorful butterfly nets.
The most memorable part of the afternoon was when we released a handful of live, Monarch butterflies for the kids to chase around the yard. The Monarchs were purchased from Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory in South Deerfield. (I was a bit concerned about the butterflies staying folded up in the tiny box provided by Magic Wings, but they assured me they were A-OK inside for the 20-odd-hours between when we picked them up and when they would be released the next day). The children (and adults) LOVED watching the butterflies scamper out of the box and take flight. And, boy, did they soar. The kids never had a chance with their nets!
Magic Wings sells live butterflies for release from mid-May to mid-October (depending on the temperatures). We paid $9 each for the Monarchs, prices vary based on type of butterfly and quantity of the order. You should call at least two weeks ahead of time to request an order. Magic Wings is also a great place to visit any time of year with their indoor tropical conservatory, and especially when you're desperate for spring!
